My 8 A.M. class would start like this.

Martin, a 2-year-old, would arrive first. Yelling and screaming at the top of his lungs the second he stepped into the school.  He refused to enter the class unless his nanny stayed with him the whole time. 

Esteban would cling to his dad because he didn't want to come to school. We struggled every class to convince him to let go of his dad. 

Sweet Mimi would burst into tears at the most unexpected moments. She was so sensitive and fragile that I never knew what would trigger an outburst.


Here's the Scary Part...


Little Tina would storm out of the room crying, looking for her mom and soother. We had to pull a teacher from another class to deal with this situation...

Samuel, a curious 3-year-old, would wander off from the group whenever he felt like it. Because the school had no doors, it was impossible to keep him in one place. I was doing head-counts to make sure I didn't loose anyone!

Jorge would hardly speak. He sat there staring. It felt like no matter how much effort I put in, he would never repeat a word in English.

And then there was Pablo. He seemed to have the gift of annoying everyone at school. Interrupting me, other students and whatever activity we were doing. Being twice the age of the other students turned him into the official bully of the class.

Having all these students in the same class, at the same time, for 3 hours... was challenging.

I coached gymnastics at a competitive level, so I had experience dealing with antsy kids... but this group dynamic was overwhelming to say the least.


Whatever I Was Doing Wasn't Working


I have to admit it...

Some days I would come home crying. I felt clueless and hopeless. I thought I had tried it all.

But I was missing something...

I Had to Try Something New

I asked myself... How could I get all my students to work together?

So I started my quest to understand what was going on.

I read every book I could get my hands on.  Attended workshops and seminars. Watched everything I could find on the subject.

But it wasn't enough. Most of it explained the same principles in different words, but had no practical application.

To Cut My Long Story Short...


The yelling and screaming stopped. Now, kids were waving goodbye to their parents and giving me a big welcome hug.

Kids would no longer run out the room. Instead, they would say what they wanted and ask me for help. If they started crying, I knew how to comfort them.

I knew something magical had happened when I saw both bully and bullied holding hands and singing a song. It was one of the proudest moments of my life.

Why do so many teachers have these problems?

We teach the way we learned in school. The old-school education system is to blame.

The old-fashioned way of teaching was all about "chalk and talk". The teacher would present information and students were expected to sit still and memorize everything.

It used to work to train people to become factory workers. But today's world is different. We can't teach that way anymore,
